Waxing Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What types of health conditions and medications interfere with waxing?
Tiffani Kim Institute does not recommend a waxing service if your client:
  • Uses prescription acne medication such as Retin-A® or Accutane®
  • Uses skin care products that contain over eight percent glycolic and alphahydroxy acids
  • Has diabetes, phlebitis or any condition that affects the skin
  • Has had a Botox® treatment in the past 72 hours
  • Has had a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment within the past 30 days
When in doubt, have your client consult with their doctor prior to any waxing service.
2. How long should hair be before waxing?
For facial waxing, hair should be 1/8-inch long and body hair should be about 1/4-inch long, to achieve a smooth, clean removal.

3. If I wax my upper lip, it will grow back thicker and darker?
Absolutely not! In fact, the hair will grow thinner. Pulling the hair from the root slows down the function of the pituitary gland, weakening the hair response. Upper lip waxing is usually needed every three to four weeks.

4. I love waxing but I always get breakouts about four to five days later and it usually lasts a week. How can I avoid this?
Try this: Exfoliate the area two days after you get waxed. Keep exfoliating two to three times a week using a sugar scrub and a washcloth or a loofah. This will prevent your pores from clogging up with bacteria and skin cells, allowing hair to grow back freely and avoiding those pesky ingrowns. It also keeps your skin clean, soft and radiant.

5. I've never had a bikini waxing and was hoping to get some information on what to expect and what type of clothing to wear.
Having your bikini area waxed for the first time can be a little distressing, so let me try to ease your mind a bit and walk you though it. When you make the appointment you should be really clear on what type of bikini waxing service you would like.

Tiffani Kim Institute has created three types:
1.  Bikini - waxing around the panty line and inner thigh area.
2. French bikini - waxing approximately two inches inside the panty line, working around the inner part of the thigh. 3. Brazilian - waxing inside the panty line and inner thigh.  Completely removing hair from the pelvic area is optional; most women like it completely bare but some prefer to leave a small strip of hair. The amount of hair removed is left up to the client and will be discussed during a consultation at the beginning of the service.

To prepare for a waxing appointment, you should wear loose-fitting pants and a pair of loose-fitting panties. This is important since the area will be sensitive and tight-fitting clothing will not allow your skin to breathe and return to its normal pH level.

6. I normally shave my chest but would like to try waxing. How long does the hair have to be, how long will the results last and how much does it hurt?
If you've been shaving for a while then your hair must be pretty coarse. Wait until hair is about 1/4-inch before waxing. If it's longer than that your technician should trim the area; this will eliminate discomfort for you and allow the technician to work faster. Avoid heat and direct sun exposure for at least 24-48 hours before your appointment. As for pain, ask the salon/day spa if they use a numbing spray to relieve discomfort. If not, take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before your session.

7. Am I still able to wax if I'm using a tanning bed?
Absolutely! Just remember to wait 24 hours before or after you tan, since both services can make your skin quite sensitive.
