Oriental MedicineOriental medicine, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system practiced to cure illness and maintain optimal health and well-being. Oriental Medicine inculdes acupuncture, herbology, Chinese massage (tuina- pronounced tway-nah), diet and life-style counseling, and other adjunctive therapies to help patients achieve optimal wellness. Unlike the Western biomedical understanding, the Eastern model of health and wellness was based on an energetic system. Rooted in philosophy of Taoism, the ancient Chinese view of the body was largely based on observations of nature. It is believed that the way nature works outside the body is the way that nature works in the body, with ‘vital energy’ flowing within and round them, preserving certain order of balance. Practice of Oriental Medicine and acupuncture is about helping the body to restore its balance, so that it may work the way in which it was intended by addressing the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms. Many Western medicines tend to suppress symptoms but do nothing to address the cause. Oriental medicine and acupuncture treats both the root and branch of disease. It is a holistic and “wholistic” approach to healing; understanding the patient in relation to his or her environment, not apart from it.
