What is Injection Sclerotherapy?
It is a series of injections that involves direct placement of a chemical (saline) solution within the vein that causes irritation that closes the walls together and creates a seal. Shortly thereafter the vein no longer carries the blood and becomes invisible to the naked eye.
What are spider veins?
Also known as teleangiectasias, spider veins are small thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. Although these super fine veins are connected with the larger venous system, they are not an essential part of it. They usually take on one of three basic patterns. They may appear in a true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point, they may resemble branch like shapes, or they may appear as thin separate lines.
What causes spider veins?
A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, such as heredity, weakened vein walls, defective vein valves, pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight change, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and certain medications.
Who is a candidate?
Almost anyone can have this treatment performed. Depending on the severity, other options may be needed to achieve optimum results.
Who is not a candidate?
- People who are pregnant or breast feeding.
- People who are severely diabetic.
How long does the treatment last?
The actual treatment is about 45-60 minutes.
How many treatments do I need?
Depending on the individual, some may require as many as 3-10 treatments scheduled every two weeks.
Are the results permanent?
As time passes a few “touch up” treatments may be necessary for new veins; however, with normal life changes such as pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight change, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and certain medications, comprehensive treatments for new veins may be necessary.
Is there any downtime?
Compression stockings must be worn for two weeks for optimum results. There may be some bruising and redness at the injection site(s). Some cramping may also occur. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately following the procedure for 20-30 minutes to prevent clots from forming.
What are Compression Stockings?
These stockings assist the natural function of your veins by offering a mild graduated compression. This compression provides a “massaging effect” that, when combined with the muscle pump effect of the calf, helps to constrict the veins. Constriction of the veins by compression stockings enables more efficient function of the vein valves, improving the return of blood to the heart.
What should be avoided afterwards?
The following activities should be avoided for 2 – 3 weeks following the procedure:
· Prolonged sitting and standing.
· Heavy weightlifting, squatting and any “pounding” exercises.
How soon will I see results?
Almost instantly, depending on the severity of the area. Each treatment will show a dramatic difference.
How does the procedure work?
The in-office procedure starts with you lying down on the bed wearing shorts that are provided for you. The area will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution. Approximately one injection is administered for every inch of spider vein- anywhere from 5-100 injections per session. Then a cotton ball and compression tape is applied to each area of the leg as it is finished. You will feel small needle sticks and a mild burning sensation. However the needle is so thin and the solution is so mild that pain is minimal.
